What Is Oud?
Oud — also called agarwood or oudh — is a dark, resinous heartwood that forms inside Aquilaria trees when they become infected with a specific mould. The tree responds by producing a dense, aromatic resin to protect itself. The result is one of the most complex and expensive raw materials in perfumery, sometimes called "liquid gold."
Only a small fraction of Aquilaria trees produce oud naturally, which is why genuine oud oil can cost more per gram than gold. In fine fragrance, oud is prized for its depth, longevity, and the way it evolves on skin over hours.
What Does Oud Smell Like?
Oud is notoriously difficult to describe because it shifts dramatically depending on its origin and how it's processed. In general, expect:
- Smoky and woody — a deep, almost campfire-like warmth
- Animalic and leathery — a raw, skin-like quality that feels intimate
- Sweet and balsamic — especially in aged or steam-distilled oud
- Earthy and medicinal — particularly in Indian-origin oud
The best oud fragrances balance this intensity with complementary notes — saffron, rose, sandalwood, or amber — to make it wearable for everyday use.
Oud by Origin
Where oud comes from dramatically changes its character:
- Indian oud — the most intense; deeply animalic, smoky, and medicinal
- Cambodian oud — sweeter and more floral; the most approachable
- Hindi oud — rich and barnyard-like; beloved in Middle Eastern perfumery
- Laotian oud — clean and woody with a subtle sweetness
How to Wear Oud
Oud is a base note, meaning it anchors a fragrance and lingers longest on skin. A few tips:
- Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, inner elbows — where body heat amplifies the scent
- Start with one spray; oud is potent and projects well
- Wear it in cooler months when the warmth of oud feels most natural, though many oud fragrances work year-round
- Give it 30 minutes to fully open — oud reveals itself slowly
EAU EAU Oud Fragrances to Explore
At EAU EAU, oud appears in several of our Extraits de Parfum — all crafted with materials sourced from Grasse, France, and formulated for exceptional longevity.
- Saffron + Savage Oud — our most unapologetically bold oud expression. Saffron opens with a metallic warmth before giving way to a raw, smoky oud heart. Intense, long-lasting, unforgettable.
- Bergamot + Rose Oud — a more approachable take. Bright bergamot and velvety rose soften the oud into something romantic and wearable for any occasion.
- Mole•cu•lar Oud — a deconstructed, modern oud. Part of our Mole•cu•lar line, this strips oud to its purest aromatic essence — clean, precise, and surprisingly versatile.
